COMP Cams® Topless 100 Draws Near

The 18th Annual COMP Cams® Topless 100 at Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove, Arkansas, is one of Dirt Late Model racing’s mega-events, and it’s rapidly approaching
With the month of August now here, along with temperatures soaring over the century mark throughout the South, all indicators point toward the rapid approach of the 18th Annual COMP Cams® Topless 100, set to take place August 19th-21st, 2010. The much anticipated event is one of just a handful of races to be regarded as a true crown jewel of Dirt Late Model racing. The crown jewel status is used to describe national events where the best-of-the-best competitors gather each year to battle in high profile events that boast high profile purses. The 2010 edition of the event will see the nation’s top Dirt Late Model pilots waging war around the 3/8-mile, Batesville Motor Speedway for a purse that includes $40,000 to win and $2,000 just to start the illustrious event.
Batesville Motor Speedway owner and operator, Mooney Starr, created the event in 1993. Starr wanted to bring big-time Dirt Late Model racing to north-central Arkansas, as he knew that fans and racers alike would flock to the area to support it. However, not only did Starr want to create a major event, but he also wanted to take it one step further by creating a trademark to go with the event. From this desire for individuality, the promoter devised the concept to run the Dirt Late Models without their roofs, and he coin the event the “Topless 100.” His theory was that without the roof, fans would get a chance to see down inside the cockpit as the drivers rocketed around the lightning-fast oval. Not only did the topless concept prove to be the perfect marketing scheme for his race, but it was also a concept that other promoters across the nation would begin to utilize in their own special events.
With a large purse in place, along with a marketing scheme, Starr’s brainchild came to life in August 1993 as race teams and fans from across the country converged on the picturesque oval, which is nestled in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. Despite a strong influx of national stars, it was Arkansas’s own Tony Cardin from Greenbrier, who pulled the upset and claimed the big win. The event was an instant success, and over the next several years it began to grow by leaps and bounds.
As the event worked through its formative years, it quickly became a who’s who of champions. Drivers such as Billy Moyer, Freddy Smith, Scott Bloomquist, Jimmy Mars, Wendell Wallace, Dale McDowell, Tim McCreadie, Bill Frye, Shannon Babb and Jimmy Owens etched their names into the history books with COMP Cams® Topless 100 triumphs. In total, eleven different drivers have claimed COMP Cams® Topless 100 crowns. Batesville, Arkansas driver Billy Moyer owns the most with four triumphs. Throughout the first seventeen editions of the storied event, the payout has been adjusted in various ways, whether through the first place money or the
payback through the field. Two-time event winner, Jimmy Mars from Menomonie, Wisconsin, claimed the biggest payday in the event’s history by walking away with $46,000 for his winning efforts in 2007.
In 2008 the event underwent another transformation as it welcomed the sanction of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS). With the incorporation of the sanction came some great additions to the event, including national television coverage on SPEED TV, as well as some LOLMDS drivers, who made their first ever venture to the facility. The end result was a definite success, and the groundwork for the partnership between Batesville Motor Speedway and LOLMDS was set in stone. The partnership grew even stronger for the 2009 event, which saw a massive crowd witness Jimmy Owens from Newport, Tennessee, top a field of 68 competitors to capture his first COMP Cams® Topless 100 crown.
For the 2010 COMP Cams® Topless 100, anticipation is at an all-time high as the top drivers from across the county once again prepare to converge on Batesville Motor Speedway. The event will be held August 19th-21st, 2010, and will get underway on Thursday, August 19th with an open practice session. Friday, August 20th will see time trials and heat races for the LOLMDS Super Late Models. Finally, on Saturday, August 21st there will be the consolation races and then the 100 lap, 18th Annual COMP Cams® Topless 100 feature event will take place. For more information on the event, please visit www.BatesvilleMotorSpeedway.com and www.LucasDirt.com .
COMP Cams® has been a supporter of the COMP Cams® Topless 100 since the event’s inception in 1993, and throughout the years it has continued to grow its support in various ways. COMP Cams® recognizes the extreme importance and impact of events such as the COMP Cams® Topless 100 to the motorsports’ world. Consequently, not only does COMP Cams® provide sponsorship support to the track for this event, as well as sponsorship support for the LOLMDS, but it will also have a full product support team onsite for the duration of the weekend to ensure that all of its customers receive top performance from their valve train components.

COMP Cams® Supports American Modified Series In Its Inaugural Season

COMP Cams® steps into sponsorship role to help American Modified Series during inaugural season
There was definitely no shortage of Open Wheel Modified competitors in the Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois area; however, there was a shortage of special events for these competitors. As a result, Niles Lauderbaugh made the decision for the 2010 season to form a touring series in the area that would allow Open Wheel Modified drivers to compete within a reasonable driving distance of their homes for increased purses. The new series was named the American Modified Series, and tracks immediately began acquiring dates.
For the first season of the American Modified Series, the tour originally scheduled sixteen dates throughout the Ohio Valley. However, due to weather issues and scheduling conflicts the final docket for the 2010 season was trimmed down to just twelve events. All of the events on the schedule are slated to pay at least $1,500 to win and $200 to start, with select events boasting as much as $3,000 to win.
Support from the competitors was overwhelming at the first event for the American Modified Series as thirty-eight of the region’s top Open Wheel Modified wheelmen entered the $1,500 to win event at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Kentucky. When the checkered flag dropped, Randle Sweeney had claimed a thrilling win over Russ Gabbert. While Sweeney claimed the win in the tour opener, it was obvious that all of the drivers were true winners with a top notch series that had come to fruition in their own backyard.
Even though three events have been nixed by Mother Nature already this season, the tour has managed to host four successful events. It has already become apparent that there is a level playing field within the tour as no driver has won more than one event. Along with Randle Sweeney, Michael Long, Mike Harrison and Jason Wheatley have all etched their names into the record book thus far in the season. The tour has averaged an impressive 39 cars through the first four events, and other tracks are starting to take notice of the growth of the tour as eight dates have already been booked for 2011, including shows in Michigan.
American Modified Series Director, Niles Lauderbaugh, gives a lot of the credit for the first year success of the tour to companies like COMP Cams®, who provided the series with sponsorship. Lauderbaugh notes, “By sponsoring our COMP Cams® Engine Builder of the Year Award, it brings a great deal of credibility to our series to have such a big company like COMP Cams® involved with us. It has led to other companies coming on board as well, and for this we are extremely grateful.”

Justin Glover Wins Thriller In Qualifier #2 For COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals

Despite finding himself behind early in the race, Justin Glover stayed focused and drove his #51 Camaro Street Stock through the field to record the feature win in the second qualifier for the upcoming COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals
Four years ago COMP Cams® Director of Marketing, Chris Douglas, conceptualized a special event that would highlight true grass root racers. Douglas recognized that there were plenty of specials in the dirt track racing world that focused on Sprint Cars and Late Models but few, if any, focused on the Street Stock division. As a result, Douglas, along with Ben Shelton of MidSouthRacing.com, developed a unique event that was tabbed the “COMP Cams® Grass Roots Nationals” at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas in 2007. The cornerstone of the event was the Street Stock division, which competed for a purse that was double the normal payout, including a $1,000 first place prize. Time trials, a dash for cash, heat races, B-mains, driver introductions and a primetime feature event were all held for the Street Stock class. The response for the first time event was a car count in excess of 40 cars and a feature event that went caution free with two and three wide racing throughout the field.
Over the next few years the event grew by leaps and bounds in terms of support. Consequently, for the 2010 event, COMP Cams® decided to take the concept to a whole new level. The end result is an entirely new program that includes a pair of qualifying events throughout the year and a grand finale slated for Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Riverside International Speedway. The grand finale has been dubbed the “COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals” and includes a purse that more than triples the total weekly purse of the Street Stock division, with a $1,500 to win/$100 to start payout. Appropriately, the qualifying events have been coined the “COMP Cams® Road To The Nationals Qualifiers”, with each event posting $500 to win, plus the guarantee that the winner of each will be granted a provisional starting position in the September finale.
After seeing the 2009 COMP Cams® Grass Root Nationals Champion, Greg Alexander of Blytheville, AR, win the first Memphis Nationals Qualifier on April 10, the Street Stock competitors at Riverside recognized the urgency of winning the next qualifier on June 26 to guarantee themselves a starting spot in the upcoming COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals finale. The finale race is expected to draw over forty entries, and qualifying for the 20 car starting grid will be difficult with over half of the field not even qualifying.
One of the competitors who recognized the necessity of qualifying for the finale in advance was 2009 Riverside International Speedway Track Champion, Justin Glover. As he prepared for the feature in the COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals qualifier on June 26, Glover felt confident
about his chances to claim the win, as he was slated to start in the third position. However, on the first lap, Justin spun out while exiting turn two and was forced to go to the back of the field.
Glover has won from the back of the pack at Riverside in the past, so he knew it was possible to do it again. As the race returned to green flag conditions, Josh Ray, Mike Bowles and Greg Alexander waged war for the lead as Glover began methodically working through the pack. Two laps later the caution waved as the leader, Josh Ray had his own difficulties in turn two and he also spun out, which allowed Bowles to take over the lead.
For the next several laps, Bowles fended off the furious advances of Alexander. Lap 10 saw the leaders entering heavy lapped traffic as Justin Glover moved into the third spot. On lap 13 Glover make a daring move around Alexander while leaving turn four in order to claim the second spot. Still leading, Bowles was still making his way through lapped traffic, which battled side-by-side in front of him. Bowles managed to maintain the lead until the white flag lap, when Glover made a power move on the high-side when exiting turn four to take the lead for the last ¼ lap and claim the $500 win and the guaranteed provisional in the COMP Cams® Memphis Street Stock Nationals. The crowd went wild.
With Greg Alexander and Justin Glover both guaranteed starting spots in the COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals on Saturday, September 18th, 2010, at Riverside International Speedway, the balance of the competitors will now face the daunting task of racing their way into the coveted, 20 car starting grid via a program that will include time trials, heat races, B-mains and a 25- lap feature event. For more information on the event, please visit www.RiversideInternationalSpeedway.com.

COMP Cams® continues to take customer service to the next level by providing direct racer support at the track for some of the biggest events of the 2010 fall season
Most companies that manufacture components for use in the motorsports’ world boast to have customer service that is second to none. However, the reality is that many of these companies only provide technical support via the telephone during business hours on work days. But COMP Cams® has always prided itself on taking an aggressive, more hands-on approach to customer service. This fall, not only will customers of the COMP Cams® family of products have access to support via the phone and internet, but they will also have an unprecedented level of direct support from factory representatives onsite at the track. The company will be sending its sharpest tech minds into the field to provide real-time product support. Representatives from companies such as COMP Cams®, RHS®, TCI®, Quarter Master® and more will be on hand at special late-season events throughout the country to assist in giving their customers a performance edge.
The COMP Cams® family of companies will begin its field invasion with the 18th Annual COMP Cams® Topless 100 on August 19th-21st, 2010, at Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove, Arkansas. Not only does COMP Cams® have a long history of being the title sponsor of the event, but they also have a long history of providing products that have powered its champions to victory lane. 2009 Event champion, Jimmy Owens, utilized several COMP Cams® products in his winning entry.
The IMCA Super Nationals, which will be held September 6th-11th at Boone Speedway in Boone, Iowa, shows up next on the radar. The event serves as a culmination of all of the divisions that IMCA sanctions. In 2009, an unbelievable amount of 816 cars representing 18 states entered the event. This event represents the best of the best in divisions ranging from Stock Cars to Open Wheel Modifieds to Sprint Cars. A majority of these hundreds of competitors utilize COMP Cams® products, and as a result, the company wants to show strong support for its devoted clients.
Immediately following is the mega-event Wissota 100 that will be held on September 15th-18th at the Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron, South Dakota, and will feature six divisions battling for their share of a massive purse. The 3/8-mile oval serves as a true proving ground for the best performing drivers and machines. Representatives from COMP Cams® and other COMP Performance Group™ companies will once again be present to ensure their loyal users have the winning edge.
On the same weekend as the Wissota 100 will be the resurrected COMP Cams® Memphis Nationals on September 18th at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas. The event, which was a mainstay at the now defunct Memphis Motorsports Park, has been rejuvenated for the 2010 season after several years of hiatus. It will have a new home for its rebirth in 2010 and will be
highlighted by a $1,500 to win Street Stock event, as well as the finale for the COMP Cams® MSRA Super Late Model tour. The 1/4-mile, gumbo oval is known to be one of the trickiest in the nation to navigate, and as a result, a full team of customer support technicians will be on hand to help racers dial in their race cars.
The racing season will wrap up with the annual Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Arkansas, which is not only the richest 360c.i. Winged Sprint Car event of the season but also the most illustrious. Approximately one hundred Sprint Cars converge on the 1/4-mile facility each year. It represents possibly the most eclectic gathering of racers, as drivers from all realms of Sprint Car racing come together for the weekend to chase glory and a $15,000 prize. COMP Cams® recognizes the value of events such as this one, and recently announced their title sponsorship of the event, which will be held October 27th-30th, 2010. This major race event will also see a gathering of experienced, technical support representatives from many of the COMP Cams® brands.
COMP Cams® sends tech support representatives to hundreds of events each year, and the races listed above are just a small representation of how the company constantly seeks customer satisfaction. In short, COMP Cams® recognizes that its products are only as good as the results that its customers reap.
