COMP
Cams® Performance Camshafts
Camshafts
are what COMP Cams® is all about.
The cam has long been revered as the "brain" of the engine,
opening and closing the valves at the exact precise instant, coordinating
the timing of each event to the exact location of the crankshaft
and piston. The cam also has the remarkable ability of repeating
this process over and over, as many times as necessary, in order
to keep the engine running at the peak of its capability. Precise
overlap events properly introduce raw fuel and expend exhaust. This
provides a highly efficient scavenging process, then repeats the
entire process all over again on the next stroke. Even more remarkable,
the product we produce at COMP Cams® is a highly modified version
of the stock, mass produced camshaft, designed to extract the most
performance possible from a given application. Highly
trained engineers, and experienced lobe designers work hand in hand
producing better, more refined products on a daily basis. Last years
product is no longer the standard by which all others are judged.
New and better products must be produced to stay ahead of the maximum
performance game. In an industry where 2nd place means 1st loser,
there is no margin for error. There is no room for 2nd best. This
is where COMP Cams® excels, we design and manufacture the winners
camshafts.
Since day-one,
COMP Cams® has sought to produce the best camshafts and valve
train components on the market. We have ventured into every
imaginable type of racing, designing products for a multitude of
engine combinations and variations. We have designed products intended
to perform at equal to, as well as less than maximum output, in
order to open up venues to enthusiasts who would otherwise be excluded
from competition.
In all of
this, COMP Cams® has been propelled to the forefront of the
automotive performance industry. We are the standard by which
performance cam companies are judged. All of this so that our customers
have the best selection of product available in the entire performance
industry.
In 1977,
there was a void in the street performance market. There were
few selections available for the street enthusiasts that did not
require excessive modifications. The designers at COMP Cams®
saw this void and designed cams that worked with stock and near
stock components, while maintaining acceptable fuel consumption
and streetability. Jobbers and performance warehouses jumped at
the opportunity to offer these products to the masses. Terms like
Pure Energy, High Energy and Magnum suddenly became the jargon of
the day, and COMP Cams® became the fastest growing cam company
in the country.
The standards at COMP Cams® have not changed. We are still the
leaders of the industry, with the finest Research & Development,
Engineering and Quality Control Departments in the performance marketplace.
The focus today is still on better products, satisfying the needs
and desires of racers from all over the world.
The appearance
of the camshaft hasnt changed much in the last 50 years.
What we know about camshafts has far exceeded the expectations of
the original designers. Every day we learn more, and everyday we
apply this knowledge to the refinement of the performance camshaft.

High
Energy Cam
These high torque cams work very well on the street. Designed
for use in carbureted engines having a 9:1 CR or less. Can
be used in conjunction with most stock components, including
intake and exhaust manifolds, and carburetors. Normally,
gas mileage will either remain the same or increase over a stock
cam

240H
High Energy is ideal for small cubic inch engines that
require good low RPM torque.
The 240H cam is a good replacement cam for O.E.M. because
no additional valve train components are necessary. This cam
works great with computer ignition systems, overdrive transmissions
and high gear ratios. The 240H cam provides a very smooth
idle, quiet operation and good throttle response. With
the 240H cam, you can expect better mileage and a slight power
increase over a stock cam.
252H
High Energy is ideal for medium-sized engines (300-350
c.i.) that require good low speed torque.
This cam is a good all-around cam for family sedans
and a great performance cam for turbocharged V-6 and V-8 engines.
The 252H cam is a good replacement cam for O.E.M. that works
with most stock valve train components. It also works with
most overdrive transmissions and high gear ratios.
260H
High Energy is the perfect cam for vans, family sedans,
pickups and tow vehicles.
This cam provides exceptional power and a gas mileage increase,
especially on the highway. With its great torque and throttle
response, the 260H cam can also be used for O.E.M. replacement
in most big block applications. The 260Hs idle is smooth
in large engines with stock exhaust systems. With headers,
the 260H will produce a slight exhaust sound.
268H
High Energy is our most versatile cam.
It is a great high performance cam for small blocks and
a powerful cam for big blocks. With its noticeable idle and
great all-around power, the 268H cam is great for daily driven
performance vehicles. The 268H cam is an ideal cam for pickup
drivers who want major power increases. It is also good for
big blocks towing heavy loads equipped with lower optional
rear end gears. |
Dual
Energy Cam
These cams have more exhaust duration and lift than intake.
Designed for applications where a slight
sacrifice in low end is acceptable for an increase in mid and
upper range RPM horsepower. They may be used in conjunction
with an exhaust system that is much more restrictive than the
intake system |
255
Dual Energy is great for low RPM, high torque applications.
It will also give good fuel economy. The 255 will have a smooth
idle and will work well in an RV or towing application.
265
Dual Energy has good mid range power for mild street
performance with a slightly noticeable idle. This cam
also works well with a stock torque converter and rear end
gears over 3.23:1. The 265 also works well with stock intake
and exhaust manifolds.
275
Dual Energy is the largest and most aggressive in the
Dual Energy series. The 275 Dual Energy Cam
is designed for high performance street driving, yet will
work a stock torque converter. The 275 will have a rough idle,
but will work with stock exhaust systems. |
| Magnum
Cam
These cams are very aggressive, designed for performance oriented
vehicles where they will see little street use. Stock
components are generally incompatible Changes are needed in
rear end gear ratios, headers and the torque converter. Magnum
Cams are available in two different lifter types:
Hydraulic
Flat Tappet Kits are listed with anti-pump up hydraulic
lifters. Providing a good compromise between low maintenance
requirements and performance capabilities
Hydraulic
Roller These have all the abilities of the hydraulic
flat tappet cams but when paired with the required roller
lifters the lobes are designed to provide higher torque output
and a smoother idle for the same RPM range |
270H
Magnum is a great cam for high performance driving in
street machines. The 270H has a rough idle in small blocks
and a noticeable idle in big blocks. This is the largest cam
you can use with a stock torque converter. The 270H will not
affect power accessories, but should be used with headers
and a 4 BBL. carburetor. This is the perfect cam for cruising.
280H
Magnum is best for the more serious street machines.
This cam has a definite rough idle and will sometimes affect
power accessories. It can be driven extensively on the street
or raced on the weekends. The 280H needs an aftermarket torque
converter, intake manifolds and headers.
286H
Magnum is a design to fill in the gap between the 280H
and 292H. Designed for serious street machines and bracket
racers. With a rough idle and lower vacuum signal, this is
not an average street cam. At least a 2500 RPM converter must
be used, but a 3000 is recommended.
292H
Magnum is for the serious Street/Strip type
car. An aftermarket torque converter should be used as
well as headers, intake and increased compression. The 292H
has a radical rough idle.
305H
Magnum should really be considered for Pro-Street type
cars where actual streetability is not a major concern. The
design of this cam also makes it ideal for all bracket racing
engines. Major engine modifications are needed as well as
transmission and driveline improvements. The 305H works best
in large C.I. engines and has a radical idle. This is the
only hydraulic cam in the series that does not have an advance
made into it and will need to be degreed in.
270S
Solid Magnum is the perfect cam for small to medium
cubic inch engines. The 270S delivers good low speed torque
with a moderate noticeable idle. This cam is an excellent
alternative to the 268H.
282S
Solid Magnum is great for street machines because it
can be driven daily and raced on weekends. This cam features
a broad power curve and torque range with a mild rough idle.
294S
Solid Magnum is a maximum performance cam. This
cam should be used in high compression 4-speed cars or with
a stall speed converter. The 294S makes great top-end power
and works well with ported heads.
306S
Solid Magnum is an excellent grind for large cubic inch
Pro-Street type engines. This cam has tremendous high
RPM power and needs to be used with headers, intake and higher
compression. An aftermarket torque converter or 4 speed should
be used. Radical idle. This cam also does not have the advance
made into it and will need to be degreed in.
268R

cams. Excellent throttle response and vacuum makes the
268R an ideal cam for Street Rods, Street Machines and Show
Cars with power accessories. The 268R is an excellent all-around
cam for the performance minded enthusiast due to its reliability
and mileage.
280R
Roller Cam Street/Strip performance or daily usage is possible
with the 280R Roller Cams broad range of applications.
A moderate idle in the higher compression engines makes the
280R a good choice for Street Machines or Street/Strip applications
where power and valve train stability are important.
288R
Roller Cam is a proven camshaft that provides great power
and reliability. This cam works best with aftermarket
manifolds, headers and other performance accessories. Stall
speed converters should be used and 4:10 gears or better.
A rough idle and moderate vacuum makes the 288R an excellent
choice for Serious Street Competition.
300R
Roller Cam is an excellent choice for maximum effort Street
Machines with small blocks and 10.5 to 1 or better compression
with 3,500 to 4,500 converters. Aftermarket headers and
manifolds are good accessories for this cam. Increased horsepower
and torque per cubic inch make the 300R a true high performance
cam in small and big block applications.
308R
Roller Cam is a true race cam featuring quality and valve
train stability. This is a maximum effort Pro Street/Strip
cam for big blocks or high RPM Small blocks. The biggest of
our street roller cams, the 308R produces maximum horsepower

This
chart represents three different lobe designs and points out
the differences between a mechanical roller (yellow), a hydraulic
roller (blue), and a hydraulic flat tappet (red). As you can
see the mechanical roller has a higher lift and a greater valve
opening than the others putting it at the top of the list of
extreme racing applications. The hydraulic roller in the middle
has a greater opening than the hydraulic flat tappet and is
better suited in high performance street applications where
power is the main concern. At the bottom of the chart is a lobe
